Why Hypedoc?
- What exactly is a Hypedoc?
- A Hypedoc is a document that serves to capture your accomplishments at work. Our proven method consists of regular reminders with unique prompts. We structure prompts around the idea of using your Hypedoc as the basis for regular self-reflection. We find that this aligns with the periods that companies review goals and conduct performance reviews.
The term "hype doc" seems to have been coined at Square. It's also known as a brag doc or career management document. While they may have different names and slightly different framing, they all serve the same purpose.
- Why was Hypedoc designed this way?
- Hypedoc's is designed around two ideas. Firstly, we believe in evidence based product decisions. We've used scientific research to design features such as when and how to self-reflect. Secondly, Hypedoc was created by an engineering manager who cares deeply for personal development. It's a synthesis from countless hours of conversations with talented engineers and other engineering leaders. We've distilled the best practices into a simple tool that you can use to improve your career.
- What should I write in my entries?
- Hypedoc is designed as a tool for personal growth. We recommend treating it as a work journal.
We seed each week with a prompt that addresses a unique facet of work. You should use this as a starting point and respond to the prompt. However, you should always also always document the work you accomplished this week regardless of how big or small it may seem.
